This Day in History: The Never-Ending Time-Out of Typhoid Mary

Alright, y’all, gather around because this story is straight-up wild. Picture this: It’s 1915, and there’s this woman named Mary Mallon, right? Folks called her “Typhoid Mary,” because everywhere she cooked, people ended up getting sick with typhoid fever. Now, Mary was like that one friend we all got who never thinks they’re wrong. She was out here spreading typhoid like it was hot gossip, not even knowing she was sick because she felt just fine!

So, the health detectives, led by this guy named George Soper, tried to get Mary to give up some samples—ya know, pee and poop—to see if she was the source. And let me tell you, Mary wasn’t having it. She chased this poor man with a carving fork when he suggested it! Imagine being chased by a woman wielding a fork just because you asked her to pee in a cup.

After a wild chase that could’ve been straight out of a sitcom, they finally nab her and put her in quarantine on this island, North Brother Island, which sounds like the worst vacation ever. They’re like, “Mary, girl, you gotta stop cooking!” But Mary, oh, she’s a stubborn one. After they let her go, she’s back in the kitchens under fake names, still spreading typhoid like it’s her job—well, technically, it was her job

Fast forward to 1915, and they catch her again. This time, they’re not playing. They put her on that island, and that’s it for Mary. She’s there for good, living out her days washing bottles instead of cooking, still swearing she’s not sick despite all the sick folks she left in her wake

Now, Typhoid Mary’s story isn’t just a cautionary tale about washing your hands, though y’all really should wash your hands. It’s about how sometimes, what you don’t know can hurt a whole bunch of other people. It’s also a bit about freedom, or the lack of it, and how we handle that in the face of public safety. So, next time you’re thinking about skipping out on handwashing, remember Mary and maybe save a life—or at least save someone a trip to the island nobody wants to visit!
